Shrub reaching 3 m or more in height. The stems are angled and characterized by being minutely pubescent. They usually bear 3–5-fid spines, though they are rarely espinose. Leaves are simple and clustered on short shoots within the axils of the spines; they are further distinguished by being shiny on the upper surface. The inflorescence is subumbellate. Flowers are yellow. A key diagnostic feature for this species is that the petals are longer than or equalling the inner sepals. The petals themselves are obovate and entire, measuring approximately 6 x 4.5 mm. The fruit is an ellipsoid to obovoid berry, measuring 12 x 5 mm (excluding the very short style). These berries typically contain two seeds.
