Moderate, clustering rattan palm, 2–4 m high when not climbing or climbing to 10–12 m in height. The stem diameter including the leaf sheath is 0.8–2 cm, while the diameter of the cane itself is 1–1.5 cm. Leaves are pinnate with regular leaflets and do not end in a cirrus. The palm produces a flagellum, and the inflorescence is flagelliform. A key diagnostic feature is the leaf sheath, which is armed with spines that are not dense, are less than 1.5 cm long, and possess a broad swollen base. Unlike some related species, the young parts are not covered in a rufous tomentum. The ocrea is typically not well developed, or is covered in spines if present.
