Rambling and scandent, much branched shrub with long stems and smooth, dark green, terete branches. The plant is armed with recurved spines measuring 2–6 mm in length. The cladodes (leaf-like stems) are solitary or arranged in fascicles of 2–7. They are characterized as being flat, costate, narrowly ensiform, and falcate (sickle-shaped), measuring 2.5–15 cm long and more than 2 mm wide.The inflorescence is a lax raceme 2–3 cm long, bearing 4–12 flowers on very thin, filiform pedicels that are jointed below the middle. Flowers are fragrant with white, spathulate perianth segments approximately 3 mm long and white filaments with grey-brown anthers. The ovary is subglobose or turbinate, 3-lobed, and light yellowish green. The fruit is a berry that turns bright red when ripe. It contains 1–3 globose seeds, 5–6 mm across, which feature a black, slightly rough testa.
